Living in Delhi
What our destination teams tell every arriving family.
Delhi is India's capital and the heart of its policy, legal, media and diplomatic life — home to 190+ foreign missions, the country's apex courts and 2,500 years of layered heritage. Expat and senior-corporate life concentrates in a South/Central Delhi belt (Chanakyapuri, Vasant Vihar, the Lutyens enclaves), with bungalow-style independent floors the norm rather than apartment towers. The single biggest adjustment is air quality: from October to February the AQI runs severe, making HEPA purifiers and the metro (over a car) part of daily life.
Air quality is the #1 issue: Oct–Feb AQI runs 200–500. HEPA purifiers in every bedroom and N95 masks are basics, not luxuries — budget them in.
The metro network (~390 km) beats any car at peak (8:30–11:30am, 5:30–9:30pm) and has cleaner air than the road on smog days. Use the DMRC app.
Live in South/Central Delhi: Chanakyapuri & Lutyens for diplomats; Vasant Vihar/Shanti Niketan for corporates; GK, Saket & Hauz Khas for value. Mostly independent floors.
Skip the airport gridlock — the Airport Express (Orange Line) runs IGI T3 to New Delhi Station in 22 min for ₹60, bypassing all NH-48 traffic.
Tap water has high TDS and isn't safe to drink — RO+UV filtration is mandatory in every Delhi household. Set it up before you move in.
Eat the city: butter chicken was invented here (Moti Mahal), Karim's near Jama Masjid since 1913, fine dining at Khan Market, street food at Chandni Chowk.
